Question:
Why are Indians so highly detailed in everything they do?
2008-06-14 20:08:01 UTC
Like alot of time seems to be spent on everything. I notice this with Indians that live in my country. At work they want too much detailed information & it wastes time, but they don't see it that way. If they are buying something they take forever about it & ask loads of questions before buying, even if the item is inexpensive so you would think it wouldn't matter if they have made a mistake (& no they are not poor people so losing a small amount of money over a mistake would not be a big deal to them). I'm not trying to offend you, I'm just trying to understand an aspect of your culture. I find I lose patience with Indians because of the high level of detail & information that they seem to require.

Well, it maybe because we have been raised like that. In India, shopkeepers and retails cheat people out of their money like crazy... this is also true in Middle East and Far East like Singapore, Hong Kong etc. Also, there are no brands and strict customer laws. In India, you cannot sue a company for a million dollars if your coffee is too hot or something like that. Maybe that's why.. Also, it may be show-off, they want to seem knowledgable about everything. I am an Indian and get screwed at home if I don't get the best deal.

THE BIG PICTURE IS THIS: In India, there is no social security system, so everyone must bank upon their savings. That's why money has a lot of value , even a cent .... Wasting money is considered almost a sin... our religion asks us to respect the value of money and not piss it off....

Well, you know, it's just a trait. Each nation has its own peculiar trait.

There might be historical reasons for it. But, yes, it's true even in India.

You see, India is a very old civilization. It has seen its share of good prosperous centuries, as well as bad miserable ones. So, maybe during the bad times people started to become more cautious about their dealings with others. They found that if they could extort as much info as possible, then that would be like kind of a warranty for them. That has continued to the present day, maybe because the good old days have never returned.

You know, in the Vijayanagar empire, precious gems like diamonds and rubies were sold like flowers on streets. This was attested by the Portuguese traveler Vasco da Gama. That's an example of the good times India had.

Hi

It's very strict parenting. We have been born and raised like this. I'm not like this because I have been born and raised in India. My parents hate it when I don't top a certain class or buy something when I could get a better quality for a cheaper price. So I know were your coming from.

You may have noticed Indians are also very competitive. It's just they way they have been taught by the society they live in.

Please do not express hatred or annoyment (don't think it's an actual word) towards Indians, we already cop enough racism as it it. Try and see the meaning behind it...its really an obligation.

I have seen Indian people annoying others in foriegn countries. Even if they want to buy a pint of beer, they ask too many questions. This will certainly irritate the locals shopkeepers. The typical Indian mentality at present is, they want everything highly valuable at the cheapest rate possible. They think that they are too clever that they always want to get the greatest deal in the market. They will not think that this will hurt others. I am sorry about this as I am also an Indian

I am working with an Indian guy in the same room and we are in client serving business. He has been on the phone for last 1.5 hour to get some free movie channels from the cable company... man enough is enough!!!

Unfortunately, I have never seen any Indian who is not like this. They should understand that they are annoying other people with this kind of attitude...

Look

It is Because genetically Indians are a very cultured strong race.

Still, due to Foreign invasion of Mughal & british, Indians were ' in great misery for 700 years or so.

Thus, Now, though, we are rich, we still are cautious while ' buying anything or spending money, to value the money.

Also, once in a foreign land, we tend to ask questions about new items we see & know more about it

Do you know - Before british captured India,, India remained in known history, the richest country till then.

Do you know - India never attacked 1st or captured any country in its 10,000 years of known history

this may be due to following reasons ...

1) basically most of Indians are coming from scarcity, so even they are well to do now, they never forget asking the details and ensure that is to worth paying this amount for this items. May be this generate competition among manufacturers and in future we may benefited further.

2) In India, if you are purchasing something you have to bargain with shopkeeper and settle for some amount which is mutually benefited. This not restricted to small grocers and lorries, but suprizingly in some malls, there is scheme that after purchasing you have to bargain at cash counter and settle the amount which is less than printed price.

3) Most of the purchaser are women and they have a lots of time to bargain and thats way they enjoy shopping. They are generally housewives and they tend to save money for their family.

i agree, this habit is ok in India but not in developed countries where all most everything is standardise and streamlined.

Because buyers should be beware always-- as per famous legal dictum

Secondly we normally don’t rely on the advertised quality or quantity because of our own experience with local markets.

thirdly we want to show we are important too more so as buyers.(somehow in India selling is still looked down as cheaper profession--the reason why there is no dignity of labor and everyone going for white collar job in software companies or government and private sector establishments)

Fourthly--your statement borders on generalization as I knew negotiation has no boarders all country men negotiate hard ---especially the first world sells arms in tough bargaining.

Lastly as I said on both sides, selling my ideas, I think there should not be any bargaining in giving me the points.

purely watch to your contemporary south Indian g/f to offload you, then we can see how a lot humorous you stumble on south indians to be :P purely kidding with reference to the above fact,of direction all of us desire and pray that such day on no account comes and you stay glued to a minimum of one yet another like fevicol kaa jod. i think of you're being subjective ,those seductive love chemical compounds on your strategies have created a kind of chemical locha and you're being blinded in the direction of certainty and information. I trust kandy ,It purely relies upon on the guy, no longer something! :D there are those with stunning wit and humor from the two aspects of india ,so very no longer user-friendly to declare who's extra helpful and it is likewise a query of determination for specific kind of humor .some would want South Indians over North Indians and vice- versa. btw the place does that flow away human beings from western component of India ,like ones from mumbai and relax of west India.

I know...But you have to realize, most of them are poor & their cultures & their society reacts differantly...They have to try & cope with ways they aren't used to...& they come to North America for a better type of life...But I do know how you feel.

They have to learn to addapt themselves to another way of life yes, because they are here...But its probably just as frustrating for these people, as it is for you too.
