Question:
Do you continue with a complaint even if you are causing a dreadful queue?

Today I made a fuss in the petrol station, as I needed to put my PIN in twice (they said the machine was giving problems) and they did not give me a reciept showing cancelled transaction. The people behind was getting really wound up as it caused a backlog, lots of sighing, muttering, underbreath cussing. I refused to leave without a signed stamped reciept from the manager saying it was a void transaction. I was not loved when I left. I consider this unfortunate for the people behind me but sensible for my own benefit. Do you stand your ground or do you back off in this kind of situation?. Whats right in your opinion?

I have done the same thing as you once where held up a queue. As soon as I heard the muttering, I turned around and said "sorry for the hold up, but I am sure you lot wouldn't want to lose £50 either". It quickly shut them up. You just need to stand your ground and not let other people bully you. Good for you for staying there.

People in petrol queues are a different breed because they get in line expecting a bargain but fail to consider there could be problems ahead of theirs. You did right not to trust a persnickety ATM as I did exactly the same the other night in a casino when I was unable to cancel when the machine apparently got stuck on stupid. Was not about to leave my PIN number logged on despite the sighs, whooshes and coughs by other patrons as that's one way identity theft occurs. Finally the device came through and the gamblers were a bit more reasonable than your gas station clientele, but like yourself, I was not about to give way to financial loss because of someone else's attitude.

Stand your ground, it is the filling station's problem that they don't have enough staff to cover this situation

Having said that, some tact is required, while I would stand my ground I would try to get the queue on my side and I might offer to wait a moment while the queue clears.

you did exactly the right thing -and I would done the same. It's all too easy to think it's not worth the bother but with card fraud so common these days it could be a nasty shock to find your hard earned cash in someone elses pocket.

In response to the other people huffing and puffing behind you - f*** em. They would do the same in your position.

Considering the issue at the heart of your complaint, I would've stood my ground. No matter what the people behind me in line said. What you did was right even if it took a few seconds out of their day.
