It is most likely the media, the fashion dictators and the entertainment industry. On TV shows and in movies alike bare legs are being shown all over the place, whether it looks good or not. Most of the time it looks awful. Then there are the so called fashion experts who have done a lot of damage by stating that bare and “natural” looks good and is sexy. Most people are followers, so there you are. The worst thing is that even young women, who have hardly or never worn any pantyhose at all make statements that they hate them, that they are uncomfortable or only for older women and such kind of nonsense. But I don’t find that in Europe it is any better. One sees very little pantyhose being worn there too. I can’t judge for Latin America or Asia, but my guess would be that in the Far East the most pantyhose is still being worn.

I agree with you that I don’t understand it at all either. I just don’t understand that anybody can hate pantyhose or dislike to wear them. Hopefully this dismal trend will come to an end in the near future.

Not all. I wear them so do plenty of other women I know. It is true a lot do not because wearing pantyhose can be seen as elderly and backwards. I think some women just don't like them. They just are not popular and haven't been for several decades. American women don't care about what women in other countries wear. It is not an importance to think about that. I have been to Latin America and Europe and can tell you as far as clothing I did not see a big difference. In colder states women will wear tights or pantyhose and in larger US cities women dress well. In Europe everyones fashion seemed stuck in the 80's and the people looked tired and worn. I was not impressed. I was in Paris last fall and while the people were dressed nice, the women had awful hair and makeup. I thought the women in Mexico City, New Orleans, and New York were much more attractive and fashionable than any european country. Larger cities in Latin and South American countries are also very fashionable. I think you are looking at the American women who have the body and fashion sense of Rosie O'Donnell (lord knows there is not a shortage of those). These frumpy women seem to be what people think of when they think of American women. I think it makes non americans feel better and superior to think that all women in the USA are like this. I think you are incorrect to say American women obsessively hate pantyhose. Most think stockings are quite sexy and will wear them. I just think most women are clueless about unergarments. Rather than take the time to research the proper sizes and what looks good on them they avoid them completely.

Funny topic, but so true. I remember growing up in the 70's till sometime in the mid 90's and at about that point by the mid 90's it was rare to see women wear P-hose, heels and even dresses or skirts and before then it was a common thing. I know a lot of women that do hate and/or refuse to wear them and worse yet I person know women that have turned down 6 or 7 figure income jobs because that was part of the dress code. I as a man, do you think I'm going to turn down that kind of money if they tell me to wear a suit and tie? Hell no. Actually before I quit dating and went the MGTOW routine I used to use that as a test on women to screen them out and it works like a charm. Very simple, all you do is when they talk about what they bought when they went clothes shopping ask them about it and act interested, then by chance ask them are there things they'd never buy. The things I commonly hear are heels, skirts, dresses, stocking and number one answer pantyhose. When a woman tell me that I say to them I'm not dating you and she asks why and I say if you can't do something that simply what happens when something major come up, are you going to refuse to do that as well? Then they tell me that they'd do it for the right man and I tell them I believe the first answer in this case is always the correct one and saying you'd do it for the right man is the wrong answer. These women show lack of pride, a desire to look complete and don't want to look good for a man. I hate the thought of going on a date and I'm dressed 100 times better than the woman I'm with and this has happened every time time in the past 10 years or so and this is why I gave up on dating. Just like Kelly's answer these women are just flat out lazy and are only about themselves and what's comfortably to them. Sometimes it's wise to make sacrifices to get a better job, to have a decent man and just to all around show that you care about more than just yourself.

What I stated does not apply to all women. I can only speak for myself and the things I've encountered. There are some women out their that actually enjoy wearing dress, shirts, heels, nylon or even P-hose, but that's few and far between in the USA. If I have to go from a women that looked great in the 80's to a total slob wearing sweat pants, flip flops, tacky tee shirts with a stupid girly design and they act like they're hotter than the ones I knew in the 80's that to me is going from looking great and having pride to hitting rock bottom. Real men move forward, never go backwards and settle.

Not all women hate pantyhose. A lot of people just prefer not to wear them.

Here are few reasons why American women hate wearing pantyhose:

Due to the growth and popularity of the internet as a means of work and communication, workplace dress codes loosened, therefore women did not feel pressured to wear pantyhose with skirts and dresses as they were replaced with slacks and pants suits.

Influence by the fashion and entertainment industry. When I see a TV/movie actress or musical celebrity appear at various formal events such as an award show wearing expensive clothes, makeup and no hose, it tells me that they are underdressed, and haven't completed their look without hosiery. I don't know what happened to the term "Pantyhose completes the look of a woman's wardrobe" but it seems to be the other way around with women today not caring how they look, nor wanting to dress classy anymore especially when it comes to wearing pantyhose with their outfits. It is likely that they have been influenced by gay men who run the fashion industry and don't seem to care about class and femininity. Instead they dictate what is in and out of fashion, and what women should or shouldn't wear in order to for them to follow fashion like sheep.

The American hose companies were not making the quality brands of hosiery than their European counterparts that adapted to new technology in creating nylon to make hose look soft and silky. The Asian hose companies, mainly in Japan, also adapted to the new technology by using various electronic devices to help women find the right skin tone for them to wear nude hose since wearing hosiery in Japan is considered etiquette at a formal engagement, business setting, and inside a public place like someones home since walking around barefeet inside is considered rude and dirty. Instead, the American hose companies stuck with old method in creating nylon to gain profit which is why hosiery has become cheap, uncomfortable, tight, and run proned that eventually caused American women to hate hose than their European and Asian counterparts. Even the hose commercials that used to air on TV and magazines stopped advertising due to its decline.

Right now, there are celebrities such as Zooey Deschanel, Scarlett Johansson, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Katy Perry, and Ariana Grande starting to wear hose more at various events, so there is hope out there for American women to wear hose again. Although it is a lot of work and a challenge to overcome, I hope to see American women start to wear hose again, and not let the haters, naysayers, and so called hose hating fashionistas allow them to think otherwise.

The women that hate pantyhose are cheap filthy whores that have no class when it comes to dressing nice, they are basically nasty sluts that have no respect for how they look.

If women hate pantyhose so much, then maybe they should hang theirselves with the pantyhose, so I don't have to put up with their whining anymore.

I am sure most women will hate this answer but most women are just lazy! Now....I agree that pantyhose are hot in the summer and thigh highs can be a pain but most women really shouldn't go to work with bare legs!! Maybe because women we were required to wear them for so long we are just going through a phase right now. I work in a professional office and wear hose every day - and I am not required to. I kinda figure it is the same if guys don't wear socks to the office. Hose completes your look and most girls...and I mean most....over 30 just don't have the legs to go bare. Now that fashion has given women a pass (for the moment anyway) they have gotten lazy. Women don't hate them....they would just rather go bare.

Thanks!

For the last decade or more, the bare-legged look has held sway fashion wise for a majority of people. This is partly because of the casualization of the workplace, houses of worship, and social settings (taking a plane ride, going to the theatre, etc.). A bigger part of this trend, I believe, came from fashionistas, and the media, who took up the fashionista beliefs about pantyhose and pounded them into the public consciousness.

Pantyhose were declared passé by the fashion crowd, and they declared their beliefs with scorn and mockery. The level of negativity was really harsh: "Pantyhose are for old ladies", "Pantyhose are for fat people who can't control themselves", etc. Local news shows added to the scorn by featuring local interest news stories about how much women hate pantyhose. Then the pantyhose bashing spread to sitcoms and movies as a plot element.

Many, many teenaged girls who want to wear pantyhose have posted "Is it OK to wear pantyhose?" questions to this very forum, because the culture has literally become saturated with pantyhose trash talk. They want to wear pantyhose but, they are, apparently, afraid of being taunted or stared at. They know that they are NOT SUPPOSED to wear, let alone like pantyhose. Even if a young lady has no feelings about pantyhose one way or the other, she knows darn well that saying "Pantyhose suck" is much safer than saying something "nice" about pantyhose.

The other problem is that even if a young lady somehow missed the anti-pantyhose bandwagon, the garment itself has overwhelmingly disappeared from the scene. If a young woman wants to “go elegant” and discard the “less than casual” yet ubiquitous flip-flops, going the extra step and slipping into a pair of pantyhose might never occur to her, despite her “classy” or “dress to impress” frame of mind.

Many young women have never seen their friends, older sisters, or cousins wearing pantyhose. They have no daily role models who wear pantyhose. Even if they see Mom dip her legs into pantyhose for worship or a funeral, most of the other women attending the event, who are younger than Mom, won’t be wearing pantyhose. The lack of pantyhose tends to reinforce the lack of pantyhose.

In my day, the occasion of a girl’s first pantyhose wearing was a rite of passage. The young lady left her girlhood tights in her dresser drawer, and put on her first pair of pantyhose. It was a sign of being grown up and mature. I suspect that there is no rite of passage connected to going bare legged. After a while, contemporary girls simply notice that their friends and peers are no longer wearing “little girl tights”, so they stop wearing them too. I doubt that this transition from tights to bare legs makes them feel grown up, but I might be completely wrong about this.

The cataclysmic convergence of dress casualization AND fashionista pantyhose beating AND the media anti-pantyhose overkill AND the ever present peer pressure, all at the same time, was a quadruple punch that knocked pantyhose right out of the mainstream arena.

However, be of good cheer. Pantyhose may be coming back. For fall 2006, every (and I mean EVERY) major fashion magazine in the USA declared black tights in, in no uncertain terms. The tights shown in these magazines were worn with the most open-toed, strappiest shoes you can imagine. Many claimed, "Well, hosiery and open-toed shoes are fine, as long as the hose aren't sheer". Hogwash! Before 2006, open-toed shoes with ANY kind of hosiery was considered worse than committing murder. Then suddenly, when the fashion world ran out of ideas, they changed the rule slightly to counteract their own hypocrisy.

In 2007, some designers displayed pantyhose in their runway shows. It made headlines, literally! Very recently, a representative from No Nonsense predicted a jump in interest in sheer pantyhose in both flesh and colored tones based on their visibility on the fall 2008 runway shows of Karl Lagerfeld and Miu Miu.

Coming later this year, in 2009, supposedly, more pantyhose: Ms. "snooty bare legs" herself, Sarah-Jessica Parker, was seen in Chanel Pantyhose October of 2008; they are apparently for “next season” (therefore, 2009). They look too stylish, too fancy, and too sheer to be considered “tights”. See for yourself: http://technorati.com/posts/urcUAdkJWZSe…

http://yeeeah.com/2008/10/23/sarah-jessi…

In addition, for the past several seasons, famous celebs like Jessica Alba, Zooey Daschanel, Paris Hilton, Beyonce, and Lindsay Lohan have been wearing sheer pantyhose quite regularly to clubs and on the red carpet. Are these young ladies "un-cool" and "out-of-step"? I don't think so. I think the rules MAY have changed, and many bare-legged disciples MAY soon find themselves out of the loop.

We can only hope.
