You can't really be sure.

When I was in Hungary, we saw three young Gypsy's walking down a small side street with their walking canes in the air, like they just got off of work. They were laughing and skipping down the street.

There is also an old women begging in the same neighborhood for the last 7 years. she is always sporting a black eye. Not sure if the cops gave it to her or whoever is forcing her on the street.

Once in S. Cal. where we used to live, my son was about 12 years old and walked to the local 7/11 store for a coke. He was sloppy and didn't comb his hair. He talked to a bum outside the store for a min. and someone put $5. in my son's hand, they thought he was with his homeless father or something. My son gave it to the bum.

Hi Skycat begging is actually illegal. You shouldn't give , it only encourages them. Most are "professional" beggars anyway. Why would anyone want to sit outside shops or in a precinct day after day, if it wasn't profitable. I can think of loads of better things to do with the time. If they are genuinely poor, then there are places they can go to get a meal and warm drink. I also don't like the ones who have little puppies or young dogs with them, they know how people will respond to cute animals. Last year in Portugal, there was a beggar with a b1tch with puppies, a very well dressed lady walked up to him, held a lengthy conversation then took the money out of the cap, pocketed it and continued to walk a little way along the road where she got into a BMW Z3. There is alot of money to be made from begging it has become a business for some.

Hope this helps Hun and that you have a good week ;-) x

A beggar. the greater severe they might do is say no. yet with being a thief it is going against others and hurts them, they lose much greater admire for me, and it could get me in penal complex. Being a beggar i think of is greater suitable, you're merely inquiring for help while your success is down yet a thief you're taking what belongs to others and doing a foul act. So i decide for beggar.

Hello SkyCat They are real beggar if they ask / beg ( usual for money). They would like you to believe they cant survive without handouts. Do you believe it and feel you should give? Do you get close enough they touch you? If you give, what stops them - and friends - from grabbing more? Will they come to you again and will they leave you alone? Its my opinion that giving any thing encourages them. Do they work? If they are or not why do they beg? Northampton, MA is consider have cops keep, or move people from being certain places when begging. Suposed to keep them away from bus stops and stores. Is that good?

Buy begging, you are a real beggar. Your question is how do I know this person is truly needy? You don't. If you wish to give, offer something other than money. A meal perhaps.

there was a wheelchair disabled woman in Kingsland High Street,Dalston who begged for money on a regular basis.her chant was "excooooooooooose me...fifty pence or a Pound please".she seems to have been moved on.

what i find annoying was that her benefits would have been a lot higher than mine and she probably had a roof over her head too!

a small fanbase built up and the inevitable Facebook page by people who hated/despised her.rumours went round that she had a BMW 3 series parked around the corner and a trendy flat in Islington.

begging is no joke.I haven't stooped that low yet despite being on Incapacity Benefits for over 3 years and not likely to find a proper job that easily, due to the nature of my medical condition.

In London begging is a micro-economy and "pitches" with the most footfall are jealously guarded.so to the ones near ATM's and takeaways.

~~I don't think you can ever tell if someone is truly needy or just out to make an easy buck anymore. I've seen too many specials on how much these people making by begging.

I give what I can afford to charities that any needy person has access too if they really need the help.~~

we cannot find out really unless you put out a detective team to tail and report on what he is really up to.

the thing is we give if we feel the person is need of help, food money or whatever else that can help him.

that's all we can do

all the rest is not our business, if he was pretending to be needy then its not our problem, tis between him and God.

i personally prefer to give something to help, rather than walk away.

I really don't know how you can tell for sure. I pass one everyday and I have given money but sometimes I think that is his job - begging. It is too bad that you can't help someone without wondering if it is for real or not.

I gave money to a chap last year in London. He was very polite and told me a very nice story. The story was so nice and he was so nice I didn't mind. Im too soft.

You get to know them. the ones who aren't tend to get aggressive or abusive if you tell them you haven't any spare change.
