Question:
Is it anti-social to use Self Service Supermarket checkouts?

Supermarkets have introduced these for "Your convenience". Ha ha. Supermarkets have introduced them because they are not late for work, they do not go off sick or on holiday, they do not want a rise in salary or a pension scheme. Your convenience has very little to do with it.

Now you may well consider me a stick in the mud Dinosaur but i flatly refuse to use these machines. I feel very strongly that to use them would be an anti-social act. Why? I live in a rural area where jobs are in very very short supply and over the last 3 years the 2 large Supermarkets in the small Market Town near to where i live have reduced the number of ordinary check outs and each have put in 8 of these machines. Each machine has basically taken the place of a human.
Surely to use the machines in an area like this is an anti-social act as every time you use one you are doing your bit helping the Supermarket to reduce much needed jobs.

I agree, they are taking the place of people, no two ways about it. Plus on the very odd occasion when I have used them they always fail at some point and take longer that it would have taken if I had queued! I have even just abandoned my shopping when it starts acting up.They are best avoided.

Using supermarkets AT ALL is an anti social thing to do, but most people (me included) regard them as essential these days. I guess the same will be true of the self service check out within a few years.

None of the supermarkets that use these have had to cut staff. The reason for these self service machines is to reduce waiting time in queues, and to provide a quick and easy shopping experience for customers. I don't go to Tesco to socialise with the spotty geeks behind the till.

I like using the self service checkouts because it means I avoid that contemptuous sneer from the teenager on the checkout when they realise that everything in my basket has a bright yellow 'reduced' sticker on it.

I won't use them. If they gave a discount for using them...which they should...I still wouldn't use them.
