My father was also a freemason, and never talked about it either. It was only later in life when I joined the organization that I learned much about it.

The Freemasons are not a secret organization as many might lead you to believe. Instead we are an organization with secrets. There is a difference. If we were a secret organization, we would not put symbols of Freemasonry on the outside of our buildings, nor would we be listed in most phone books.

Instead, as an organization with secrets, we have a few secrets which we do not reveal here or anywhere. These have more to do with recognition of one another than anything else.

I hope this helps.

There are no secrets in Freemasonry. Everything that is taught in Lodge is available online and in readily available books (Amazon, eBay, etc...). It is likely your father did not talk about it for 2 reasons 1) although there are no secrets, we don't run around talking about everything and 2) he might have been trying to peak your interest so that you would want to see what it was all about.

To some other points made already:

*Freemasons to not "choose" people to be amonst us, if you want to become a Mason, contact a local Lodge and ask. That is the only way to become a Mason.

*The words, grips, etc... are not secret, you can find out all about them by searching the web and reading any of the published Masonic Ritual texts. One of the more popular ones is "who will help/save the widow's son"...nothing to those though, just fun.

*Books by Knight and Lomas freely mix fact and fiction and you should read them in that light.

Freemasons are believed to be a Secret Society, this is probably what you called their secret.

I believe the Freemason's secret is: money in the USA especially.

Well, it's a secret, and they all took a vow never to divulge it. My dad was a Freemason, and he said he took his vow under the penalty of death. Meanwhile, there is information about Freemasonry available on-line.

I don't think they have as many secrets now as they like to advertise their support of charities. Does the secret have anything to do with standing on the square, the secret handshake and the codified social conversation (eg "how's your...")?

Stephen Knight wrote a book about them about 15 years ago, but I didn't read it.

Read Albert Pike's Morals and Dogma, and Mackey's Encyclopedia of Freemasonary. That will tell you quite a bit more than you realise.

They can't. They take horrible oaths. Go to the library, you will find, I'm sure, some books about Freemasonry which will astound you.

There are 33 degrees in the Scottish Rite, and with each degree you take more oaths.

Or www.infowars.com. PLEASE read as much info as you can.

I think it was suppose to be that the masons were protecting Jesus because some people don't believe that Jesus died on the cross.
