Why do some people criticize quiet people?

They say things like quiet people are rude, lack self-confidence and/or have low self-esteem. It is so stupid for people to criticize others that are different from them. Personally, I feel that quiet people are better at listening than people who consistently talk all the time who do not listen well.

I am a quiet person, and also get miffed at people thinking everyone should be a raging extrovert, like there is something wrong with being quiet. My childs teacher commented about my child's quietness once, and i told him off - that quietness is not necessarily a handicap!

frankly, i generally ten to believe what people say as far as the age-old self-esteem issue goes...there's generally an issue like such, even if said issue has come and gone, but the silence may continue...

i certainly do not believe that quiet people are deserving of the criticism they receive. People who make such accusations probably don't understand why people are so quiet...

and i completely agree on the 'better listeners thing. very true...

I think because quiet people are more complex or so people think. They don't know what you are thinking, and so they have to put a name tag to you. I go both ways. I can be a quiet as a church mouse or as loud as an elephant. Depends on who I am around. Here's an for instance. My son and I went out to eat...They were teasing us because they said...your mom is weird...when your here she is so much fun, and when she is by herself we don't know if she is mad or what...she don't talk. I have never noticed that about myself because I thought I was always outgoing. But looking back, I am very reserved when I don't have someone with me.

I agree, quiet people are probably more intelligent or at least less arrogant than a loudmouth with an inferiority complex. Don't let the bastards get you down :-)

im quiet :) and i do have self confidence and esteem. i dont try to be rude. i just naturally am.

definitely better at listening... i have my loud moments and i dont hear a word other people say.. but ya just because they dont talk much it gives people space to assume things. :D
