People of color - Am I wrong to let my white toddler dress as Doc McStuffins for a Disney theme party? It's her fav show and she loves her.?

My 3 year old blonde haired blue-eyed daughter wants to dress as Doc McStuffins for a Disney themed party. I already bought the costume for her at christmas because it's her favorite show and she adores Doc and loves giving her toys checkups. She also has stuffed Doc, Stuffy, & Lambie toys, and Doc pajamas and even Doc panties. My friend told me it's racist for a white person to dress as a black person... She said it's "cultural appropriation" and I should not let her attend the party dressed as a black character because it's going to make people of color angry... is this seriously offensive? I'm not painting the kid's face black, or making her into a stereotype - she wants to dress up as her favorite tv character. She went to a princess Halloween party as Rapunzel that had black toddlers dressed as Elsa and Ariel. My friend said that's different because the children of color don't have as many choices so they have to dress as white characters. Should I really try to explain to my toddler she can't dress up as Doc because it's offensive? How do I even explain that to a 3 year old? Sorry if I am naive, but I think it's nice she wants to go as Doc because she thinks she's awesome and wants to be just like her.

you're not wrong as long as you don't do anything that might push it , for example making her skin darker. besides a character like doc mucstuffins wasn't meant to exclude or include any races, so in my opinion it will be okay

Let her wear it my kids are 16, 12, and 2. If anyone gets offended, THATS racist. What, they can make little orphan Annie black, but a little girl can't love doc?!?!!

I'd let my daughter wear it.

you are a racist "people of Colour" is the same as saying "NI""er"

thumbs down you are a racist

Person of color. The term person of color (plural: people of color, persons of color; sometimes abbreviated POC) is used primarily in the United States to describe any person who is not white. The term encompasses all non-white peoples, emphasizing common experiences of systemic racism.

just from Google USA i rest MY case

Your friend is nuts. Or some crazy troll.

Just how is dressing up line a doctor cultural appropriation?

----

----

OK -'just tell your friend your child does not see color. And any girl can be a doctor. Dress your daughter up like a doctor. She can call herself Doc McStiffins or Doc Ally (her name).

FYI I think it's your friend that has racial identity issues, not your 3 year old.

And "people of color" is a common term to describe non-white. It's not racist. But your friend is being a racist.

Cultural appropriation is really cultural appreciation in my opinion and it should be shamed. Also just because the character is black doesn't make it black culture. If there are white people watching the show then clearly it wasn't made for black people only

i mean she's 3 years old what does she know about racism. it's not racist at all you're not making fun of the character you love the character so if anything you're supporting the people of color. plus doc is not even black to be honest she looks tanned. don't deny your kid wearing what she wants because of what some people "might" think, which is by the way far from the truth. let her wear what she wants. she's 3 for gods sake.
