So sorry, guys, lived in upstate NY for a loooong time now, and I have NEVER referred to myself as a New Englander nor heard of another New Yorker do such a thing. If they had, they would have HAD to be corrected, since New York is DEFINITELY NOT one of the New England states.

New York is not in New England. New England is Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire & Maine. I have no idea why they call themselves New Englanders but they aren't.

A yankee exchange right into a nickname for human beings from the northern (somewhat northeastern) states (New England section, long island, Pennsylvania, New Jersey...) a protracted time in the past, yet i do no longer think of every physique somewhat makes use of it anymore. exterior of the U. S., a lot of human beings use it or Yank to intend any American. I have not have been given any thought the place it began, sorry.

Because it is still New England, in essence. And Upstate New York is also influence by what you call 'real' New England states like NewHampshire and Mass. And, I'm thinking it sounds wierd to call yourself a "NorthEasterner".

i have lived in vermont, Massachusetts, upstate and downstate new york. when i lived in vermont residents called themselves Vermonters (more then new englanders) in Massachusetts people were new englanders or red sox fans
upstate new york is where i have spent most of my time - we are new yorkers. in fact most of us would find it insulting to be called new englanders - not because we hate new england, i like it a lot. just new yorkers are proud to be new yorkers

I would imagine that it sounds more refined and prestigious to refer to oneself as a "New Englander" as opposed to saying "I come from upstate New York". I mean what do people from New York call themselves anyway? New Yorkers? New Yorkians?

I think it's because they are so close to the New England states that they just informally refer to themselves as New Englanders.
