Question:
If it's say, Wednesday and you say next Saturday do you mean the upcoming Saturday or the one after that?

Or say you say last Saturday, do you mean the most recent one or the one before that?
I am asking because people around here in CA say next is the one after the upcoming and last is the one before the most recent. I hear it's different in different parts of the country.

This is confusing! I learned from experience! It may seem simple to the 'common folk' - but for me, I have lived in different cultures, regardless if it is the same language - etc.. etc.. Here is my advice:

Simply - clarify when they ask. 'Do you mean this coming Sat or the folIowing?, if it is it confusing to you - the same just might be the same in return. Ever think of that?

I know for I lived in Europe for six years and it is also different there in different countries - best to clarify. Never assume.

If i say next Saturday, i mean the one after the one coming up. We say this Saturday for the one coming up. If i say last Saturday, then i mean the one before the most recent. Hope that helped.

next saturday - the saturday after the one coming (or the next saturday if it is a saturday)

last saturday - the most recent saturday that happened (unless it is Sunday it could really also be interpretted as the the most recent saturday before yesterday)

this saturday - can be interpreted as either a past or future saturday as long as it is a close day (on this one, the words after "this saturday" really determine which saturday. ex1. "this saturday i went to the park" that is the most recent saturday that has passed. ex2. "this saturday i want to go to the park" that is referring to the saturday that is coming up)

idk.... grammar is confusing....

If you want people to understand it is the saturday coming up, just say "this coming saturday" or "this saturday". Otherwise for next weeks' saturday say "next saturday"
