Why would a co-worker try and do another co-worker's work?

He not only tries to do some of my work but also tells other workers that he is responsible for parts of my job. I told my manager but she just ignores the situation. Other workers are impressed with the work I do. I confronted him and he said I need to be flexible.

Yeah...um he's gunning for your job. Block his a** and ask for tasks that you know he can't do. Your boss will see you as a weak link and fire you so the thief can have your job. Or you could have him do a job that you know isn't necessary or required and BAM!!! But seriously, take a stand and tell your co-worker on no uncertain terms that you're not putting up with his crap and guard your work. Take his work load off his hands...
