Question:
Why do younger people percive it as "cool" to be dangerously skinny?

I understand peer pressure and I understand wanting to look your best, but being *too* skinny seems to be fad for a lot of younger people these days and I don't understand why.

There's so many media articles and TV programs showing how dangerous it is and also peoples opinions of looking skinny isn't looking good, so I can't see why they still want to be skinny? I fully understand being healthy and fit but why skinny?

I'm only 19 but the dangers of putting my body through such things to be skinny scares the life out of me! Slim and fit is fine lol.

I'm not saying people don't have a choice but I can't see why you'd want to risk your life to look bad?!

Can someone please give me their opinions on this being skinny fad? I find it hard to get my head round, and I'd like to understand it from some other perspectives!

Thanks!
And have a good day :o)

For every time a young girl sees a warning about her body and being too thin, she will see 3 advertisements that depict beautiful, dangerously thin women... Now, with the growing trend of reality shows about modeling and fashion designing, it is becoming more and more common to see really thin women. The more we see it, the more normal we think it is. Which is a problem since the average American woman is 5'5" and in a size 12. Where are these women in our magazines and on our tv's? The media throws extremes in our faces all the time (morbidly obese or eating disorder- thin!)

I also think girls these days have so much stress on them with shcool and friends, love lives and life in general that it is a way to completely control some aspect of their life... Sad, huh?

You are right. Being fit and healthy is one thing, teetering on the brink of life and death is another. We live in such a materialistic, appearance driven society that we have lost track of what is really important. We are also raising a generation of children that have such low self-esteem, are not confident, and have a twisted view of themselves. For such a long time it has been acceptable to fast to be on the wrestling team, on the gymnastics team, in ballet, etc., that we have passed on from one generation to another that the dangers aren't significant when they actually are...extremely. Until we can accept and be happy for who we are, how we look, and being accountable for our own actions, unfortunately, this trend will continue. Instead of going along with the masses, if we as individuals, stay true to ourselves and pass that along to our children, then it is quite possible that the numbers could decrease.

I think what it is, is that everyone wants to look healthy type of skinny, but they cant infact see when they reach it.

Everyone believes that there is something wrong with them, I believe there problem is the fact they cant say ok i now look good. They'll see that little lovehandle that isnt there in the air brushed pictures in the magazines and think ok i'll just get rid of that and ill be perfect. But it doesnt end, theres always another little thing that needs fixed!

It's not just peer pressure. It's the pressure of a society that demands it.

As you have stated, it is what's prominent in mass media. There's a supreme "thin is in" statement for women today, and it's sad that some have to go to such extremes to keep up. Eating healthily is most important, and like you said, fit is fine.

On the flipside, we men have pressure too. Just not to the extreme that women have. :)

When I was a teen, I was dangerously skinny, but it was natural. I filled out in time. I look around me and do not see ANY dangerously skinny kids anymore. I see dangerously obese kids. We should be posting concerns about them instead of focusing on slender people.

It more or less turns into a competition. You get your weight down so far, only to hear that someone else is less, so you try to beat theirs, and it goes on and on. The less fat you have on your body, the more irrational your mind thinks (this is not for naturally thin people, just those that consistently starve themselves), so they don't realize they are hurting themselves. Its also a form of rebellion, especially when they have people telling them that they need to gain. Its one way to show that they still have control over at least one aspect of their lives.

confident perhaps you probably did get somewhat too skinny. you may desire to placed on some muscle which seems good. eat a weight loss plan that by no potential makes you too fat or too skinny like ingesting lots of culmination. you do no longer could desire to learn grotesque fat that hangs throughout. placed on somewhat good muscle. eat greater healthful ingredients and carry out a little resistance guidance and you will look greater desirable than in the previous or after. In England, they call women folk birds. In Australia, they call women folk Sheilas. In us of a of america we used to call women folk chicks.
