Why are some people who go online so PARANOID about giving out their FIRST NAME ONLY to people in a chat room?

This is something that quite frankly, I have always found to be a bit disturbing, and yes, PARANOID. These people are NOT being asked for personal information like social security or credit card numbers, addresses or family names. It seems to be a very sad scenario, just my opinion.

You can never be too careful these days. Especially online. Scam artists nowadays can do you huge harm even if the only thing they know about you is your name. So to be safe, never give out your full name even if it's just a chat room or forum. Better safe than sorry.
